1 Hook

Activity: Other — Discussion

Ask students how many have to pay for their own car insurance.

Ask how many students' parents complain about the cost of their car insurance.

Most students have raised their hands for one of the two questions. Direct a discussion about costs of insurance and why insurance is important.

2 Pretest

Students will take a quiz on Socrative on insurance facts. This will provided the instructor with information about how much students understand insurance.

3 Direct Instruction

Activity: Other — Note taking

Types of Insurance PowerPoint will be used while students take guided notes on the PowerPoint. After each section of insurance is covered a YouTube video will be shown and students will take notes on the video. Use the Insurance 101 videos for auto, health, life, and homeowner's. Students will complete notes and save those notes in their personal drive accounts. The notes will be used as part of the research section of the lesson plan.

4 Direct Instruction

Activity: Exploring

Students will be shown how to use the References ribbon in Microsoft Word to record research citations and generate a works cited page for the research part of the public service announcement. Students will also be shown basic internet research skills for finding information on their assigned insurance type. Once, students are familiar with the References ribbon and researching students will be assigned one of the following types of insurance: auto, health, homeowners, or life.

5 Guided practice

Free, Paid

Students will be given an outline of the information they need to gather and cite for the public service announcement. Students will be given 5 minutes to find their first research item. A Padlet will be opened and students will be asked to post their first research item to the Padlet. As a class we will evaluate whether the research is valid and should be included in each student's research. This will allow the teacher to make sure students understand what they should be researching and that they are using good information. Re-teaching can be done at this stage on research if needed.

6 Independent Practice

Students will continue to work through the research requirements and citing the research items they find on the internet. After finding all the required material students will generate a works cited page from the References ribbon on Microsoft Word. Students will then write a public service announcement from the information they gained through class notes and research. After the script is written students use Audacity to record the public service announcement.

7 Wrap up

Socrative will be used to quiz students on insurance concepts and to see how their attitudes have changed about insurance after learning about it.
