The Value of Values
The teacher show students some of the sample commercials on values.com. We will discuss what the pictures, music and words communicate and what makes it so powerful. The teacher will lead in a discussion asking the what the students think are some of the reasons why we have such diffuculties with behavior in our schools, community,etc. Encourge the students to think about what values could be instilled in students that would possibly change some of the negative behaviors we see.
2 Direct Instruction
The teacher will guide the students to www.freestoriesforkids.com. The teacher will quickly show how to navigate to the stories that teach values. at this point, the teacher will read one story to the students. After this, the class will navigate back to www.values.com an look under the values and quotes tabs. Discussion will be lead by the teacher as to the quotes and what they mean as well as the many values and what they mean.
3 Guided Practice
Students will be given a code to create an educational account on animoto.com.
Students will use previously viewed websites as well as other resources to research and create a short commercial to promote the value they choose. Students will be encourgaed to use pictures from the school share folder of our community and their peers. Additionaly, students will be guided to creative commons for free use photographs. students will be encourge to use and site quotes for famous people or from teachers or family member that communicate the important of a value. teacher will oversee students as they work and give assistance as needed.
4 Independent Practice
After students complete/edit/revise/produce the video they will "share" it with the teacher through animoto.
During the "Viewing Party," all the students will view each value commercial and anonymously critic the commerials and vote on the most effective one.
The top 3 most effective ones will be "aired" on the school news.
