"The Landlady" by Roald Dahl-Evaluating Foreshadowing
The teacher will play a short video clip which includes examples of foreshadowing from popular films. They will ask students to write down at least two examples they see.
The teacher will then lead a short discussion on foreshadowing and how it is used in films as well as literature.
Students will watch a short video clip with examples of foreshadowing . They will write down two examples they see, and we will discuss these in class.
2 Direct Instruction
The teacher will create a game of Kahoot which demonstrates to students the elements of the plot found on a plot diagram as well as define foreshadowing. The teacher will then allow students to play the Kahoot using their own devices or classroom set of computers.
The students will play Kahoot and identify plot elements and foreshadowing.
3 Guided Practice
The teacher will place students into small groups and they will be assigned a set of pages from "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl. The students should only need approximately minutes. The teacher will ask each group to find clues or hints which foreshadow the protagonist's, Billy, fate on the teacher created padlet. The wallpaper for this tablet is a graphic organizer. Students also have a paper copy of the graphic organizer. The padlet will be projected on the front board.http://padlet.com/homulka_a/thelandlady
The teacher will discuss and correct or expand on the examples students provide if necessary during the discussion of these examples.
Students will move into their assigned groups. From the assigned pages they will search for clues or hints which foreshadow the protagonist's, Billy Weaver, fate. In order to share their findings with the class, students will place them on padlet inside the graphic organizer I used as wallpaper. Students will also write down other groups examples as we discuss them.
4 Guided Practice
The teacher will ask students to evaluate the authors use of foreshadowding in the short story "The Landlady." The teacher will ask students t share their responses on a separate padlet.
Task: Evaluate the authors use of foreshadowing in "The Landlady." Did it build suspense for the reader. Answer in 5 -10 sentences.
Students will take 5-10 minutes to construct a written response to the question. Those who volunteer will place their responses on padlet for the class to see. Students will also analyze others responses by providing comments to their evaluations of the author.
5 Wrap-Up or Extension
The teacher will provide students with instructions on how to create a business letter, and an example of how it should be formatted.
Students will construct a business letter to a TV production company in which they ask for "The Landlady" to be turned into a TV mini series. They must provide reasons and examples from the short story to explain why it would be a suspenseful show. Students will be permitted to make two changes to the show if they feel necessary.
