1 Hook

Begin class by getting technology into the hands of your students. In my classroom, my students get on a computer every day, so we begin the school year the same way.

When students first sign in to Classcraft they are able to customize their avatar and choose what type of character they want. Allow some time for your students to do this in the beginning. They will be excited to see that you are gamifying your class.

2 Direct Instruction

Have your students join your Google Classroom, and show them step-by-step how to open and turn in an assignment, post comments, and answer questions. This is a great time for students to complete a small assignment (perhaps a Getting to Know You questionnaire).

3 Guided Practice

Google Drive
Free, Paid

Create a scavenger hunt for students to familiarize themselves with Google Drive. Think of all the tasks students will need to know how to do in your classroom and include them in your scavenger hunt. Examples are:

  • Create a new folder in your drive.
  • Create a document and put it in your new folder.
  • Share the document with me.

4 Wrap Up

Free, Paid

Finally, have a review of everything that was learned by playing a quick game of Kahoot! Create a quiz before school starts asking questions about Classcraft, Google Classroom, and Google Drive.

If you start your year off using the tools you will use the most in your classroom, your students will be ready from day one.
