The Diary of Anne Frank-Analysis of Themes
Read the novel as a class. Be sure to analyze the plot, conflict, characters, and settings of The Diary of Anne Frank. When finished reading allow students to play Kahoot! as a class. This serves as a fun game as well as a formative assessment. It helps students to recall which events occurred in novel and also review the background information and setting, which is an important aspect of the themes.
Students will read the novel, The Diary of Anne Frank, as directed in class. The majority of class time will be spent on analysis. Students are welcome to BYOD when playing Kahoot! or they may use a netbook available in the classroom.
2 Direct Instruction
Review the themes of the novel discussed in class and mentioned in the kahoot.
Theme 1: People in the world are inherently good.
Theme 2: Remembering is important.
Theme 3: Stay positive in the face of evil and despair.
Separate students into small groups of three of four and assign them a section of the novel. Ask them to search for evidence in the text which supports the themes. Make sure they share their findings with the class using padlet.
After they have placed their examples on padlet discuss each example with the class.
With your group search through your assigned pages of the novel in order to find quotations which highlight the themes discussed in class. share these examples with the class using padlet.
Create a graphic organizer to place the examples given by your group and discussed by other groups in the classroom.
3 Guided Instruction
Ask students to construct a plot diagram of the novel using the Read: Write: Think website. The plot diagram will also address the themes in the novel and at what point in the novel each theme begins to develop.
Students will use Read:Write:Think website to construct a digital plot diagram of the novel including the exposition, rising actions, climax, falling actions, resolutions, setting, themes, and characters. Students will use the information we have discussed in class and our analysis of the novel to complete the plot diagram. Be sure to label the point at which we first see evidence to support each theme.
4 Independent Practice
Now that students have discussed the themes and created a Plot Diagram they can begin to construct an essay by using on their school google drives. They will be provided with enough class time to do so .
The essay must address the following prompt:
Discuss one of the themes found in The Diary of Anne Frank. In your thesis, explain how the theme is developed. In your body paragraphs, give specific examples of scenes from the novel in which the author develops the theme.
Students will use their Plot Diagrams as a pre-write and construct an essay which addresses the prompts provided.
We will use turnitin.com to submit the final draft of the papers, and also complete a peer review . Provide students with a rubric to evaluate their peer's essays as well as support questions.
Students are typically required to create a turnitin.com account when they enter 7th grade in our district so my students already had an account. Students who do not must first create a turnitin.com account.
Students construct an essay and submit the final draft to turnitin.com. Using a rubric students will evaluate one of their peer's essays.
They should also answer the following questions after reviewing:
1. What did you like best about the paper?
2. What questions do you have about the paper?
3. Were the reasons supported with enough evidence fromt he text?
4. What suggestions do you have to help your peer improve his or her paper?
Responses should be provided to their peers.
