Objectives

Students will distinguish among the three branches of the U.S. government and identify the functions of each. The U.S. Constitution created three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. Student will explore the executive branch which consists of the president, vice president, and members of the president's cabinet.  Students will also virtually visit the original meeting places of the legislative branch ant the two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The will investigate the original judicial branch and the courts across the country, the highest of which is the Supreme Court. Students will discuss the checks and balances system and identify why this system is unique to our country.

1 Hook - 3 Truths and a Lie

  • Teacher will show the video titled 3 Branches of Government.
  • Teacher will place students in groups of 4.
  • Teacher will instruct the group to identify the 3 students who will come up with facts and the 1 person who will create the lie.
  • Teacher will facilitate group presentation and class discussion on the 3 truths and 1 lie.
Student Instructions
  • Students will be placed in groups of four.  Students in the group will choose three people in the group to come up with facts or truths from the video and one person to create a lie. 
  • When the video is over, groups will present their 4 statements to the class.
  •  The class will identify the 3 truths and 1 lie.

2 Direct Instruction - The United State Constitution Google Expedition

  • Teacher will assign the Google Doc titled The United States Constitution to students in Google Classroom.
  • Teacher will instruct students to use the VR Goggles to View specific rooms related to the formation of the three branches of government.
  • Teacher will guide students through the expedition and prompt them to discuss and answer questions on their google doc. 
  • Rooms visited on the expedition:
    • Independence Hall
    • Constitutional Convention
    • The Founding Documents
    • Congress Hall, House of Representatives
    • Congress Hall, Senate Chamber
    • Old City Hall, Supreme Court
    • The White House
Student Instructions
  • Students will access the teachers google classroom ant the assignment for the Google Expedition.
  • Students will use VR Goggles to view the rooms used when forming our three branches of government.
  • Students will follow the teachers instructions throughout the google expedition.
  • Students will discuss with their partner or group the guided questions listed on their Google Doc titled - The United States Constitution.
  • Students will use the explore option in google docs to research more information when needed.
  • Students will enter their thoughts on the document and submit it to the teacher.
  • Student questions require them to distinguish between the three branches of government and their duties.

3 Wrap Up - Where We Were and Where We Are Now

  • Teacher will access Philadelphia on Google Maps.
  • Teacher will drop a pin at each of the locations explored in the Google Expedition.

  • Teacher will then drop a pin at Washington DC 
  • Teacher will explore the current building used today by our government.
  • Teacher will lead a discussion with students to compare and contrast the building of that time period and the building used today.
Student Instructions

Students will discuss with the teacher the location of the building of our founding fathers compared to the buildings used today.

Students will again discuss the three branches of government and their duties.
