The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components
1 Hook/Attention Getter
Teacher will grab students' attention by asking: "Are you having a hard time deciding on where to focus your attention when exercising? More than likely you have been working out or participating in activities that focus on The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components without even knowing it! Today, I will introduce those components then you will have an activity to practice your understanding on each component."
Students will listen to teacher during Hook/Attention Getter
2 Direct Instruction
Teacher will use MindMeister to present The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components. Teacher will explain the state standard associated with the lesson, introduce each component (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) with it's definition as well as an example activity.
Students will listen to presentation on the information above and ask questions if necessary.
3 Guided Practice
After teacher presentation, teacher will guide students through setting up an account on MindMeister and describe how create their own map. Teacher will need to borrow an iPad cart containing at least 25 iPads. Once each student has logged into the iPad with their school username and password, teacher will have students open the MindMeister app, which will be previously downloaded on each iPad. Teacher will instruct students to sign up with the same username and password they use for their school account. Once all students have successfully signed up and logged onto their account, teacher will demonstrate the functions of the app by using the map created on The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components. Teacher will add, delete, use the function buttons to show students how to properly add and/or delete information to their map. Teacher will answer student questions to ensure students understand usage of the entire app.
Students will login to iPad with their school username and password. Students will open MindMeister app and follow teacher's instruction on how to sign up using their same username and password they use for their school account. After students haves signed up and logged into their account, they will follow along with teacher's demonstration on the functions of the app. Students will practice adding, deleting, and using the function buttons as teacher demonstrates. Students will ask questions to fully understand the use of the app.
4 Independent Practice
Teacher will instruct students to create their own map using MindMeister. The map will include their personal meaning/definition of each of The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components and give one example activity for each component. Students will save their map and students will present their map with peers and teacher. As students construct their maps, the teacher will circulate around gymnasium, assist students if needed, and give feedback when necessary.

Teacher will ask: "Now, think back to the beginning of the class when I asked if you wondered where to focus your attention to when exercising. Now we understand the different components of fitness and can start focusing on each component to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Can you think of other digital tools or apps we could utilize to demonstrate our understanding of The 5 Health-Related Fitness Components? Is there a way to participate in activities or exercises to also show our understanding of the components? Great job today!"
Students will consider and answer questions listed above to show their understanding of the entire lesson.
