2 Direct Instruction

Akala demonstrates and explores the connections between Shakespeare and Hip-Hop, and the wider cultural debate around language and it's power. This helps students see the relevance between Elizabethean language and today's modern language.
3 Guided Practice
Students will work collaboratively in groups (one group for each act) to rewrite one scene using contemporary language. Students will upload to Edmodo one copy per group. Teacher will facililate and conference with groups as students work.
4 Independent Practice
Students will use the following website: http://www.classtools.net/FB/home-page
to work collaboratively to create a fake facebook page for Romeo & Juliet in order to summarize the play using contemporary language.
Divide students into groups (one for each act of the play). Students will work on creating statuses from different characters throughout their assigned act. When all groups are finished, the class should be able to see and read an summation of the play.
Students will share final class product...Romeo & Juliet's Facebook (Fakebook) page that summarizes the entire play using modern speech to demonstrate understanding of the main points of the play.
