Research a Historical Event

Explain events in a historical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text

Students will be able to: 

  • research a historical event
  •  explain major events leading up to event.
  •  use a graphic organizer to collect information
  • create a presentation to give to classmates

1 Hook

Activity: Exploring

– Students will watch video clips of different historical events using National Archives.  Students may or may not have read about the historical events.  Examples of events could be the making of Mount Rushmore, 911, Presidential Inaugurations, and Pearl Harbor

Student Instructions

Take notes on which videos they would like to research more in-depth.

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Presenting

Teach students how to conduct online research, find credible sources from which to gather research, and give credit to those sources: 'The Key to Key Words (3 - 5), 'Whose Is It, Anyway? (3 - 5), 'How to Cite a Site (3 - 5)'. (Really liked these when I found them)  I will research a topic and show students how to record their information using Inspiration Maps for organizing notes.

3 Guided Practice

With guided instruction based on the lessons given during direct instruction, students can begin their research.  Students will use the following resources;  World Book, National Archives, American Revolution, Teachinghistory.org, PBS Kids Go!

4 Independent Practice

Activity: Exploring

Students continue research and collect information from the resources; World Book, National Archives, American Revolution, Teachinghistory.org, PBS Kids Go!  Students can also be collecting images for their presentation.

5 Wrap Up

Free, Paid

Using the information collected, students will create a presentation using Popplet to present to their classmates.
