1 Hook/Attention Getter

Activity: Conversing

Ask the students questions about relationships and facilitate a brief discussion.

  • What is a relationship?
  • What relationships are part of your life?
Student Instructions

Students will participate in discussion following their basic expectations.

2 Direct Instruction

Define Relationship...

  • The definition of relationship is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.

Read "Characteristics of Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships" aloud as a group. Popcorn read the different characteristics so that everyone will be able to participate. Discuss each characteristic and make sure that the students understand what each characteristic means. Asking for examples is a great way to check for understanding.

3 Guided Practice

Use the attached link to play "My Paper Girlfriend" on the SmartBoard as a group. After each question is answered Trust, Communication, and/or Respect will change. Have a discussion with students about why that is.

4 Independent Practice

Activity: Drawing

Have students come up with three things that they can look for in a relationship to help them recognize whether it is healthy or not. This will become their three non-negotiables.

Students will develop a written list of three non-negotiables.

5 Wrap-Up

Activity: Presenting

The students will present their non-negotiable lists with each other aloud.
