# Pythagorean Theorem

Objectives

Students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem using it to find the missing hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle.

Students will be able to:

• Identify and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle.
• Identify and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing leg of a right-angle triangle.

#### 1 Engage

Engage students to watch a couple of short videos to kick start a discussion about Pythagorean Theorem and how it applies to solving for right-angle triangle lengths. Ask students to pay attention to the videos so that they know what a hypotenuse and legs of a right-angle triangle is as it applies to Pythagorean Theorem.

#### 2 Explore Activity: Conversing

Teacher will ask students to exchange information they learned about the videos with a neighbor closest to student. Ask students to discuss the importance of Pythagorean Theorem and how you can solve right-angle triangles with either the hypotenuse or legs length that was described in the videos.

#### 3 Explain

Teacher will ask students to arrange their desks (out of 20 kids) to pair in groups of five to play a game involving Pythagorean Theorem (Jeopardy). Each student will have to collaborate in their teams to answer the questions pertaining to Jeopardy’s questions. Students will only be supplied one scratch plain paper for each team. Students will have to use a fast-paced technique so that they can be the first to answer. The questions will be displayed on the projector.

#### 4 Evaluate Activity: Assessing

Ask students to rearrange their desk back to normal. Give students a quiz towards the end of the class and have them turn in once completed (handout quiz attached).
