1 Modeling with Mentor Text

Activity: Reading

Teacher reads a picture book to the students (How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long). Discuss as you read the elements in the story: beginning, middle, end, humor, dialogue, etc.

Student Instructions

Listen to the story your teacher reads. Think about what the author uses to make the story interesting. If you were writing a story about becoming a pirate, what would that be about?

2 Planning Writing

Activity: Creating

Model using a story map with students (I used simple beginning, middle, end) with the mentor text as a model. Have students create a story map for their own stories.

Student Instructions

Using the class story map as a model, create a story map for your own story! Create a beginning, middle, and end! Include any ideas you have for including humor, dialogue, and suspense.

3 Writing

Activity: Creating

Using student story maps, students will write story text.

Student Instructions

Use your story map to write! Divide the story into events on your story map. Write your events in a story format!

4 Present

The Puppet Pals HD app allows students to create an animated presentation of their story that can be exported and shared in a variety of ways (social media, websites, in class). Students will create presentations of their stories. They will import characters and settings, both their own and stock characters from in the program. Students will narrate their stories within the program. Students will save and export their projects to be shared with a wider audience. Student Instructions

Use the Puppet Pals app to record your story. You may import pictures of yourself and any other characters you need. You may also use the characters and settings that come in the program. Move characters in and out of the scene window. Record the dialogue and story. Don't forget to preview your presentation with the green play button when you're done and then save! See your teacher for help exporting your video.
