Students will be able to think critically on information presented to them and explain scientifically why these products or concepts are not effective to consumers. Students will be using the following strategies in the lesson:

  • give and receive meaningful feedback
  • use a variety of media to communicate with a range of audiences
  • share ideas with a range of audiences using a variety of digital environments and media
  • locate, organize and analyze information from a variety of sources and media

Prior knowledge: Students should have a fair understanding of the human organ systems and how they work synchronously together to perform one or more vital functions. Students should be able to state the purpose of the lymphatic system, list and understand the functions of major organs in the lymphatic system.

Teacher's Notes:

This lesson is designed for one 80 minute block or two shorter classes. It is assumed that students are already familiar with tools such as Google Classroom, Canva and Piktochart. The lesson has an overarching inquiry question: Why is it important to keep a healthy balance?

1 Hook

At the start of the lesson, show the students the experimental part of the video muted. Explain to the students that this is a minimized version of Aqua Detox and explain to them what the purpose of Aqua Detox is (without the reveal). Ask students what do they see, think and wonder about Aqua Detox

Introduce the following questions as the guiding questions for the lesson:

  • Why is it important to keep a healthy balance?
  • What is the motivation for people to purchase services or products to keep a healthy balance?
  • How has media shaped our perception of what healthy is?
Student Instructions

Brainstorm to provide answers to the See, Think, Wonder activity.

2 Practical

Activity: Investigating

Provide equipment for students to conduct Aqua Detox themselves. Have the following image shown in the projector: https://matrixmassagespa.com/wp-content/uploads/Ionic-Foot-Detox-Color-C... and ask them if they felt their lymphatic system being detoxed.

Student Instructions

Conduct the experiment safely. Make detailed qualitative observations.

3 Discussion and Conference

Meet with students individually to gauge their understanding of pseudoscience products. Try to dissuade students from concepts such as flat earth or global warming since these concepts can be disproven. Use an example of your choice.

Student Instructions

Submit ideas on Google Sheets to make sure that ideas are unique. Meet with teacher to discuss what parts of the idea are scientifically true and what other things they are claiming that are not true.

4 Plenary

Collect students' infographics and provide instantaneous feedback to students if they need to change or correct information. Double check citation to make sure that they comply with your school's citation policies (ex. our school wants our students to use MLA-8 citation).

Submit infographics with works cited onto Google Classroom.
