1 Hook: Practice first by building vocabulary with MindSnacks.

  •  Students will be given an iPad with the app downloaded and ready to start.
  •  One period will be given to students to work with the app MindSnacks to practice their vocabulary skills and learn new words.
  •  Discussion:  What word did you find unique in the way you learned it?  Do the methods of instruction help you to remember? How?

2 Direct Instruction, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice

SAT Word Slam
Free - $3.99
Free, Paid

Direct Instruction:  After students have successfully brought up the app on the Ipads, brief overview of the app will be provided along with everyone going to the same word to be analyzed as a group.; (Currently, this app is not free, but have purchased with school funds to install on ipads. 3.99 and is stored in icloud to add to other devices. If not wanting to use this app, a free app, Suvobi can be substituted.  This app isn't in game form and not really fun, but does help with practice.

Students will practice for several periods learning the techniques of buidling and memorizing vocabulary.  They will learn how to think critically and begin to develop skills on how to think in test mode continuously.

After initial instruction is over and we move on, we will still continue to use the Word of the Day push notification in this app as a bellringer assignment to continue learning of new vocabulary.

Guided practice will be going over several words as a group to start and then independent practice takes place when students are given class time to work on their own. They will be monitored to make sure they stay on task.

3 Wrap Up

Free, Paid

This website SAT is designed to provide practice for the SAT.  Students will work first half of class on taking sample test and reviewing weak areas.  SAT UP is an app that provides vocabulary practice to see how well they know vocabulary.  You are immediately notified as whether your answer are correct or not.  You build and build on words to increase vocabulary.

With the website, students will be required to show instructor at the completion of each test in order to receive credit.

With the app, SAT UP, the students will each day, write down four words they were unsure of and keep in journal.

At the end of the lesson, each student reviews their words from each day in the journal.  They will form groups of two and choose four words total: two from each of their journals.  Together, they will research and present a creative way to memorize the meaning and usage of their words.  Each group will present their words in mini lessons to the entire class.  After all presentations, a vocabulary test will be made and given to the students for a grade.
