Student Notes

1 Hook

Teacher will first introduce the theory of plate tectonics by showing the video on the layers of the earth. Teacher will also show the video on convection currents to show why tectonic plates move.

Student Instructions

Students will write down notes of any observations as they watch the video.

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Presenting

Teacher will present a Powerpoint on the layers of the earth and convection currents.

Student Instructions

Students will be filling out a follow sheet as they listen to the teacher and watch the Powerpoint.

3 Independent Practice

Activity: Creating

Teacher will introduce and explain the group project on creating a song/poem/movie on the layers of the earth.

Student Instructions

Students will get into groups of 3-4 to brainstorm and create a project that incorporates the layers of the earth. Students will also be expected to include the idea of convection currents in their project to explain that tectonic plates move because of the cycle that occurs in the mantle.

4 Closure

Teacher will start Kahoot to see what students can recall to assess student knowledge.

Student Instructions

Students will need their laptop or phone to play Kahoot to show the teacher what they recall from plate tectonics.
