Objectives

Students will be able to...

1. describe the size of an atom.

2. name the parts of an atom.

3. describe the relationship between numbers of protons and neutrons and atomic number.

4. draw Bohr's models of elements #1-20.

1 HOOK/ATTENTION GETTER

THE TEACHER WILL:

1. place the picture of the gold atom on the smart board.

2. ask the students what the picture represents. What is the picture?

3. guide them to the answer. ANSWER- a gold atom with the energy levels

Student Instructions

THE STUDENT WILL:

1. raise hand when they think they know what the picture is.

2. take several guesses as to what the picture is.

2 DIRECT INSTRUCTION/GUIDED PRACTICE

THE TEACHER WILL:

1. instruct students to get into their lab groups (each group is pre-determined and has three members).

2. pass out one iPad to each group.

3. introduce the lesson on the parts of the atom with the app of Educreations (already prepared).

4. give the students the link.

Student Instructions

THE STUDENT WILL:

1. watch the Educreation video that was prepared by the teacher.

2. follow the directions given in the video.

3 INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Activity: Drawing

THE TEACHER WILL:

1. monitor students group work for the atom models as described in the Educreation video.

Student Instructions

THE STUDENT WILL:

1. draw Bohr models for elements #1-20 and determine the number of protons, electrons and neutrons in each model.

2. raise hand if they have difficulty.

4 WRAP UP

THE TEACHER WILL:

1. prepare an exit ticket by using the website Socrative.

2. Collect the data from the site and determine if students need more practice with Bohr's models.

Student Instructions

THE STUDENT WILL:

1. go to the Socrative site as instructed by the teacher.

2. answer three simple questions about the lesson so that the teacher can determine if more instruction is needed-EXIT TICKET.

2. upon leaving the classroom, return iPad to cart.
