4 Technology Activity--My Media Life Graph

Google Drive
Free, Paid

During this part of the lesson students will create a bar graph of his/her media use by taking his/her 24 hour usage and multiplying the values by seven to calculate a weekly average.  Please provide the students with your Google e-mail address to he/she is able to share his/her completed data table and bar graph with you.

You may want to ask questions regarding the students average weekly media usage.  When I completed this lesson and assignment with my students, I had students (more than I thought) spend 40+ hours playing video games.  This would be a good opportunity to discuss healthy and unhealthy media habits.

Student Instructions

You will need to access your Google Drive account using a school account or personal g-mail account.   You will use the data you collected from your 24 hour media use log and multiple these values by seven to calculate an average weekly usage. After you have calculate these values you will use Google Sheets to create a table of the data as well as a bar or column graph of the data.  Remember that you graph should have a title, x and y-axis labels, and be visible on the same sheet as your data.  You will share this document with your teacher using his/her e-mail address.

5 Reflecting on my media use

Create the following reflection question using the Socrative website.  Provide students with your "room name" and have them respond to this question after completing the media use graph.

Based on the media logs and bar graphs that you made, is there anything you would change about your media habits?

Student Instructions

Access the Socrative website student login (https://b.socrative.com/login/student/) and type the "room name" provided by you teacher into the required field and respond to the question posted.

Based on the media logs and bar graphs that you made, is there anything you would change about your media habits?

6 Exit ticket quiz (Closure)

Create a Kahoot quiz using the three question from the question from the Common Sense Media: Digital Literacy & Citizenship Teacher Edition: Grades 6-8 iBook.  These questions have been provided to you in this section.

TJ uses digital media more than any of his friends. Sometimes TJ is online by himself while his friends are hanging out together. One downside to using digital media the way TJ does is that he might:

a) Have more online friends than most people

b) Miss out on having fun with people in person

c) Share comments online

Feedback: The correct answer is b. Because TJ spends so much time alone online, he might miss out on the fun his friends are having offline.

Question 2 of 3

A ___________________ is a regular behavior or practice.

a) habit

b) ceremony

c) chore

Feedback: The correct answer is a. A habit is something you tend to do often. An example of a habit might be regularly checking your email every evening after you do your homework.

Rachel is curious about how much time she spent using digital media last weekend. Look at the record Rachel kept and circle all of the times she used digital media.
