1 Hook

Use a few Learnzillion videos about different models of multiplication to "prime the pump" for your the videos your students will be making.

Here are a few examples:

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Creating

Create a live version of one of the Learnzillion videos with some manipluatives from the classroom.  I like using cubes or counters to show the array model.

3 Guided Practice

Activity: Conversing

Engage students to talk to their partners about how they would explain multiplication to someone.  What tools or manipulatives could you use? Have students gather materials that they would need and pick a multiplication problem.  Have them build and explain it to one another.

4 Independent Practice

Educreations allows a student to create and record a quality presentation using pictures, text, drawing, and voice. When students have explained their thinking to a partner, introduce Educreations. If you have not already explain how to take pictures, draw, and add voice to a project.  Have them record their own explanation of their math problem.

5 Wrap-Up

Share student videos with one another, have students engage in conversations about questions they still may have about the problem. Have students discuss other ways they could have modeled the same problem.
