Activity: Reading

The teacher will read the story, Lon Po Po, A Red Riding Hood Story from China, by Ed Young. With the help of the students, the teacher will also create a bubble map on chart paper describing the main character, Shang, based on inferences the students made as the story was read. The students used the sentence frame, I infer Shang is __________ because __________.

Student Instructions

Students will bring their iPads to the floor & have them face down in their laps.

2 Direct Instruction

The teacher will demonstrate how the students are to open the Paper 53 app and draw their inference of the main character, Shang. The teacher will also demonstrate how the students are to use the camera tool on their iPads to take a photo of the cover of the book and a photo of the class bubble map. The teacher will remind the students to push the “save” button after each step. Finally, the teacher will demonstrate how the students are to create a Shadow Puppet of their inference. The teacher will open the Shadow Puppet app and model how the students are to push the green create new button. Next, she will model how the students are to find the camera roll and choose their illustration, the photograph of the cover of the book and the photograph of the bubble map. She will also model how the students can “reorder” their pictures. Finally, the teacher will demonstrate how the students are to press the start button to begin their recording. The teacher will begin recording her voice on the first slide saying, “We read the story, Lon Po Po.” The teacher will push the arrow to go to the next slide with the photograph of the bubble map and say, “I infer Shang was __________ …,” then push the arrow again to the final slide of her illustration and say, “Because she ________." The teacher will then click the save button. She will show the students that they are to click the “Done” button on the top right hand corner of the window that pops up.

Student Instructions

Students will bring their iPads to the floor & have them face down in their laps as she is modeling what she expects the students to do.

3 Guided practice

After the demonstration, the teacher will have the students turn their iPads over & open the Paper 53 app. She encourages the students to try the different drawing tools on Paper 53. She will also have the students test out how to manipulate the palette of colors so they can change the shades if they so choose. The teacher will give the students about 5 minutes to "play" around with the different drawing tools.

4 Independent Practice

The teacher will stop the students and have them turn their iPads over in their laps again so that she can go over the instructions once again as to what her expectations are of this project. She calls on different students to tell the class what step one, step two and so on are. Finally, she releases the students to find a spot in the room where they feel they can work independently and instruct them to get to work on their Shadow Puppet of their Lon Po Po inference. As the students are working, the teacher circles around the room assisting students as needed and checking in with their progress. When the majority of the class is finished, the teacher will gather the students back together so that she can demonstrate the final step.

5 Wrap Up

When the students are gathered on the floor, the teacher will have them turn their iPads over in their laps. She will commend the students for how hard the students worked! She will open up her iPad and model how the students are to click on the Seesaw app to upload their Lon Po Po Shadow Puppet. She will demonstrate how the students are to click on the Seesaw app and scan the QR code for our class that is hanging on the wall. Next, she will model how the students are to push the green + sign in the right hand corner and then choose the camera roll icon. Then, she will show the students how to scroll down in the camera roll to find the Puppet icon. After she clicks on the Puppet icon, she chooses the Lon Po Po Shadow Puppet that she just created and clicks on the green check mark that is up in the right hand corner. Finally, she will scroll down on the list of students’ names, click on her name and click on the green check mark once again. She tells the students that now her Lon Po Po Shadow Puppet is uploaded into Seesaw where it is awaiting approval. The teacher releases the students again so that they can complete this final step. The teacher will assist any students who might need help with this final step. As students finish, they can help others who might need assistance. As the students finish up, the teacher has them pair up with another student to share their Lon Po Po Shadow Puppets. The teacher asks each student to give his partner a positive comment about the work his partner has done on his Shadow Puppet.
