1 Intrdouction to Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion (Hook)

Using YouTube, teacher should introduce the history of how scientists observed the motions of planets. This will allow the introduction of Brahe and Kepler's analysis of planetary motions that led to the 3 laws.

Student Instructions

Students will analyze and discuss the implications of scientists defying cultural beliefs in older times and what science would be like today without the scientific analysis and discoveries of Brahe and Kepler.

2 Understanding Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion (Direct Instruction)

Walk students through the 3 laws of planetary motion. Ensure that students record and understand the laws of motion for future reference.

Student Instructions

Students will record the laws of motion using Google Docs on their iPad devices and save them to their individual Google drives.

Discuss what implications the 3 laws of motion might have had on the world of science during in Kepler's time.

3 Investigating Kepler's 2nd Law (Guieded/Independent Investigation)

Using an interactive on students 1:1 iPad devices, facilitate student investigation of Kepler's 2nd Law. Be sure to check that students are understanding the implications of changing aspects of the systems such as mass, eccentricity, etc.

Student Instructions

On their individual 1:1 iPad devices, students will investigate Kepler's 2nd Law.

Answer the investigation questions on assigned worksheet.

4 Investigating Kepler's 3rd Law (Guided/Investigation Investigation)

Using an interactive on students 1:1 iPad devices,  Facilitate student investigation of Kepler's 3rd Law.

Be sure to check that students are understanding the implications of changing aspects of the systems such as mass, eccentricity, etc.

Student Instructions

On their individual 1:1 iPad devices, Students will investigate Kepler's 3rd Law.

Answer the investigation questions on assigned worksheet.
