Activity: Assessing

The Keyboard Game from Primary Games Arena is a great way to get the students excited about typing while you assess what prior skills they have for keyboarding.  Just show them how to navigate to the game and let them play.  In this timed game, they earn a point for each correct keystroke and lose a point for each incorrect keystroke.  They get really excited and want to beat their score.  While they're playing, observe behaviors:

  • Are they sitting properly?
  • Are they using two hands?
  • Are they use all of their fingers?
  • Are they using or near home row?
  • Are they able to find the letters/keys?

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Exploring

Depending on the age and/or prior knowledge of the students all or some of the following could be used.

  • Short YouTube video to demonstrate sitting properly in different scenarios, after discussing how to sit properly constantly reinforce by asking "Show me sitting properly."
  • Keyboard Finger Guide to introduce the responsbilities of each hand and/or finger

3 Guided Practice

Demonstrate for students how to access and use Dance Mat Typing

4 Independent Practice

Provide students with indpendent time to move through the program.

5 Wrap-Up

Activity: Assessing

Recap key points in lesson, have students volunteer answers or call outs.  Challenge students to type with two hands and ten fingers form now on.
