1 Vocabulary Hunt

Provide a vocabulary list for the current class book. Usually you can search online to find one if you don't already have one. Here is an example for The Phantom Tollbooth or find it here.

Choose a word to use as a class example.

Let students  skim the list or the book and choose a word  they do not know. They will use this word in the next activity.

2 Creating an Interactive Slide to Teach Others the Word

Students should consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of the chosen/assigned vocabulary word.

Students should create a slide for the word using presentation software. The slide should include:
  • Vocabulary word

  • Definition

  • 3 synonyms

  • A complete sentence using the word as it would be used in the novel.

  • An image representing the sentence.

  • A personal audio recording of the word correctly pronounced and its definition.

  • A personal audio recording of the sentence.

  • Audio should be clickable.

Micnote app could be used if presentation software audio tool is not available.
Direct students to instructions for Video tutorial and sample image of completed project.

3 Putting it All Together

Combine all of the vocabulary word slides into one presentation. Allow students to peer edit slides checking the information and the interactivity. Post the combined presentation online so others can use to help understand the vocabulary for the text before reading it.

Note: Online collaborative tools like Google Presentations/Slides allows students to work together and to continue to add new slides as they are created.

Share a link to the presentation on Twitter so others can benefit.
