Integrating Technology into a Lord of the Flies Unit
Kahoot - Students will take a survival quiz in Kahoot in order to prepare for The Lord of the Flies. This quiz will assess their ability to survive in the wild should they ever become stranded on a deserted island. This Kahoot assessment will be used to introduce thematic aspects of The Lord of the Flies.
2 Direct Instruction
Students will fill out a learning map in Google Drawings which will outline the major objectives and essential questions for the unit. They will revisit this learning map throughout the course of the unit in order to reinforce their understandings of the following questions:
How do complex characters develop over the course of a novel?
How do dynamic characters differ from static characters?
How can an integral setting operate on a symbolic level?
3 Guided Practice
Students will perform close readings of selected passages using the comment feature of Google Drive. Assignments will be distributed using the Google Scripts gClassfolders and Doctopus. Students will annotate the texts and the class will answer analytical questions with the teacher as facilitator and using a shared document to collect the findings.
4 Independent Practice
Students will independently annotate short passages of The Lord of the Flies and develop written analysis of various lengths using text evidence pulled from the passage using the comment feature on Google Docs.
At the end of the unit students will take a Kahoot assessment measuring their knowledge of The Lord of the Flies, their ability to indentify how language reveals meaning in specific passages that were explicated through close readings throughout the unit.
