1 listen and analyze differences in instrument timbre through a composition project

Play a teacher-created song for students to show them an example of what they can do with Sketch-a-Song

List the four different instrument families as headers in padlet (Woodwinds, Brass, Strings, and Percussion).

Ask students to list instruments that belong to each category, and also justify their listing with at least one reason. For example, how do you know that a flute is a woodwind instrument?  -- It produces sound by blowing air.

Allow students time to create their 8-measure song in Sketch-a-song, using only ONE instrument family. After the songs are complete, have students play their songs for one another and guess which instrument family they chose.
