Students will watch watch this video to review text features of informational text.
2 Direct Instruction
Students will work with a partner to come up with examples of informational text features.
We will then create a anchor chart as a class to record our examples.
Use scholastic News to model how to read an article, locate examples of text features and fill out an organizer.
3 Guided Practice
Students will break into small groups to find a topic to do their research on.
They have to choose a natural disaster and an example of how this type of disaster has effected our country (if possible).
They are to take the information that they find and fill in a different organizer that I will hand out.
They have about 15 minutes to gather as much information as possible and then return back to their seats.
4 Independent Work
Once students have gathered their information as a group, they will each create their own Prezi to showcase their findings. (This part may take a second day in order to complete it).
They will then post their assignment to Google Classroom so that they can share them with the class and I can grade it.
I will give a few students the opportunity to share their completed prezis.
Students will then write down on a post-it note, one thing that they learned from this assignment.
They will then put their post-it on our anchor chart that we made during direct instruction.
Possible extension activity: Students will draw a picture of their natural disaster and write a brief summary about it to be displayed in the hallway.
