This lesson is a review of impressionism from 10th grade. We will dig dipper into our understanding of impressionism as a movement, as a style, and as an art form that identified a culture.

-Identify an impressionist work of art, and describe the feelings it evokes, and compare impressionism with other art from the 19th century.

-create an impressionistic work of art themselves and be critiqued by a fellow artist/classmate.

-be able to write a short essay summarizing their understanding of the Impressionism movement.

1 Hook: Video introduction-

Have students use i-pads to take notes while they watch the introductory video to 19th century art.

Student Instructions

Watch the video and take brief notes on your i-pad about the main points that stand out to you.

Consider: What things took place on the art scene in the 19th century?

What was the norm in art before the 19th century?

2 Direct Instruction/guided practice: View video and create mini-painting.

Before students watch their instructional video, go over vocabulary words.

Student Instructions

First: watch the tutorial video on painting with acrylics. You may want to watch this a couple times, or you can pause and play at your pace. Using the provided mini canvas', create your own impressionistic piece. (Tip) Some artists/students may want to paint as they watch.

3 Independent Practice- Paint!

Activity: Creating

Create an impressionistic painting using acrylic paint. The painting must display the techniques employed by impressionists of old, and it must have a subject within the painting that tells me something about you (the artist) personally.

Student Instructions

Create an impressionistic painting using a acrylic paint. The painting must display the techniques employed by impressionists of old, and it must have a subject within the painting that tells me something about you (the artist) personally.

Steps-

1) Draw basic areas, ideas, and subject material with graphite.

2) Paint initial layer.

3) Complete 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4 layers of painting.

4) Have a classmate critique your painting.

5) Paint adjustments (if necessary) after critique.

6) Display painting at front of classroom.

 

4 Wrap Up- Art review and summary.

Introduce students to art url. Ask the students to briefly review the 12 works of art on this page. They must choose two that are most influential, interesting, and important to them. Then they are required to give a short essay on why these art works and artists are the most influential, interesting and important to them and describe why.

Choose the two works and artists who are most meaningful to you.

Write an essay with these main components.

-MLA Formatting. 

-5 Paragraphs or more.

-2 artists/works must be identified, explained, and expounded upon. (info found within website)

-Appropriate grammar and punctuation used.
