The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created in 1948.  Sadly, people living today have had their Human Rights violated.  Using the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, Global Concern Classroom and Youth for Human Rightsstudents will be able to:
1.  Identify the role and connection between the Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Millenium Development Goals
2.  Think critically and find solutions to complex global problems
3.  Take action and find creative ways to get involved

1 Hook

Activity: Exploring

Students are introduced to the unit by exploring the Story of Human Rights.  There is a great 9 minute documentary that is very inspiring.  This will provide a framework for the need to know your rights, and think about the power of the individual to ensure that those rights are honored. 

Using guides and posters from Global Concern Classroom, have the class break into groups and disuss posters and collectively identify which rights are being violated (if any). 

2 Direct Instruction

The crew at Concern are amazing people who present relevant and enagaging information that is developmentally appropriate.  They are also flexible on the times you would have them present.  

The class presentation will launch into the Millennim Development Goals and focus on how Concern is working towards eradicating extreme poverty.  It is inspiring to see what students are capable to doing to support others. Concern will work with you to identify concepts you would like to have presented.   

It could be nice to show a quick video on YouTube called UN Millenium Campaign.  

3 Guided Practice

Students will break into small groups and research topics using the Concern Guides:
1.  Child Labor
2.  Child Survival
3.  Climate Change
4.  Displacement
5.  Education
7.  Hunger
8.  Maternal Health
9.  Water
10. Women's Rights

Students will process new information from the guides and collaborate with their group taking shared notes using Google Docs.  Students will also identify which Human Rights and MDG's are connected to the topic they are researching. As a group, students should examine and discuss possible solutions to the conflict. Collaborative notes will also be taken about solutions.

4 Independent Practice

Students will be called to action.  They will spread awareness and display their learning by creating a website with the small group they have worked with.  All of the research could come from the Concern Guides and students could also do additional research. 

As far as assessing students, I have used a Project Based Learning Rubric from the Buck Institute for Education.
There will be seperate tabs that students will individually be responsible for. Sample tabs could include: 
1. Home Page with Overall Conflict
2. Global Connections
3. Case Study
4. Essential Question Group Response

Students will then use other websites to create content and embed it to their site.  Students could embedd presentation information from sites such as Voki, Smore, Animoto, Story Bird, GlogsterEdu, Pixton, PowToon or Google Presentation (to name a few).

5 Wrap-Up

Students present their research by teaching the class using their websites they have created.  Their website could be posted on Padlet so other classmates have access to their sites.  The last part of the project is to find creative and meaningful ways to get involved.  The website is a start to spreading awareness.  Students could brainstorm other ways to be part of the solultion. 

As an extension, students could dive into a service learning project based off of their passions and research. Students could participate in a Book Club that related to topics related to their research.  For example. if they are passionate about access to clean water, perhaps reading a "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park could be a great way to extend.
