1 Hook 1 - What is the Hour of Code?

1. Introduce the lesson by asking students if they know why you are there/what is the Hour of Code?

2. Explain that it is a world wide project that happens every year to try and give 10 million students the opportunity to try coding, for one hour

3. Show video

2 Hook 2 - Is ISD Particpating in the Hour of Code?

1. Ask students if they can find out if ISD are participating this year. Can they find us on the map?

Student Instructions

1. Try to find ISD on the map to make sure the whole world knows we are also coding.

3 Hook 3 - What is Coding?

1. Before the video ask the following questions:

  • What is coding?

2. Watch the video and ask the following questions:

  • What is coding?
  • Is it being used anywhere in this room?
  • Is it used in your kitchen? (microwave, cooker, fridge)
  • Is it used anywhere close by on the street? (traffic lights)

Follow these slides to use the above videos and then move on to introducing Scratch and how to create their first game.

Provide students with the worksheet to follow and create the MarioKart Game.

Student Instructions

Students work through the instructions.

Do not spend too much time designing the car or the race track, save these extra modifications for after you have coded the game.

Launch this game to let students do a quick recap about the lesson and find out where the can get extra resources.
