1 Introduction

Have the students watch the "Amoeba Sisters" video.  Offers review of the cells and structure as well as previews all of the cell's organelles.

2 Guided Practice

Using a factory as a comparison to how the cell organelles work together, have students work with a partner to compare the functions of each organelle to the parts of a factory.  They can post the cell organelle, its function as well as its comparable site in the factory on Padlet.  Use the following description to help students get started.

Imagine a busy factory manufacturing the latest must-have gadget. Whether they make hover boards, cell phones, or cars, most factories are set up in essentially the same way. All factories have exterior walls that protect and support them and interior walls that create separate work areas. They usually have some kind of production line where a product is assembled and an executive department that decides what product is made. A finishing department processes and prepares the product for shipping, and a packaging department wraps the product. In addition, a factory has a receiving department that brings in the components it needs to make its product, a communications department that allows it to contact suppliers, and a power plant that provides the energy it needs to run. Finally, a custodial staff keeps everything clean and in good working order. Cells are very similar to factories. To stay alive and function properly, cells have a division of labor similar to that found in factories. Compare the cell organelles you have studied to the comparable part in the factory.

Using Padlet, you will work with a partner and post the name of one organelle, it function and its comparable site from the factory description below.

3 Group Practice

Using the Fakebook or Twister app found on ClassTools.net, students will create a post for each of the organelles in a cell.  This can be assigned individually or in groups.

These were originally set up for Historical Figures so a few modifications will have to be made.  For the born date, students will need to find when the organelle was discovered.  For the Family, students will post if the organelle is found in a bacterial cell, plant cell, or animal cell.  For "Friends", they can post related organelles.  They can also post "Hometown" (location in the cell) and "Biography" which can be used to describe the specific function of each organelle and its role in overall cell functioning.  **Remember that every organelle is very proud of its function – champion each organelle by describing impacts on the cell if each organelle was damaged or absent.**   Each student/group should make 3 "posts" given from the organelle's perspective.

The "Twister" page is slightly different.  Again, it was set up for historical figures so some modifications will have to be made.  The students will give a username that reflects their function in the cell.  They will then give the real name of the organelle.  They can then give a tweet about their organelle as well as the date in which the organelle was discovered.

4 Exit Ticket
