1 Hook

Activity: Exploring

Students participate in media circles (like literature circles, but with media). Students view clips from two very different films set in the Great Depression: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Story and Cinderella Man

2 Direct Instruction

Students watch three videos on BrainPop:  "The Great Depression," "Causes of the Great Depression" and "The Stock Market."  They take notes in their Evernote on these BrainPop movies.

3 Guided Practice

Students use a teacher-created notebook that they import into Evernote to answer questions on the historical background of the novel we'll begin reading (set during the Great Depression).  

4 Independent Practice

Free, Free to try, Paid

Students continue outlining and working on a timeline created in Evernote and once they begin reading the novel they are able to continue adding notes to this app.

5 Wrap-Up

Free, Paid

Students use their smartphones or laptops to access socrative and have online exit slips or short quizzes at the end of each class to identify student interation, engagement and to see which students need some remidation work next class.
