Grade 10 Chemical Names and Formulas Review

In this lesson students are using IPads, in a 1:1 setting, to review the concepts related to writing the formula and names of chemical compounds. The students will be using an app called Nearpod.

S2-2-02 Explain, using the periodic table, how and why elements combine in specific ratios to form compounds.

Include:  ionic bonds and covalent bonds

S2-2-03 Write formulas and names of binary ionic compounds.

Include:  IUPAC guidelines and rationale for their use.

S2-2-04 Write Formulas and names of molecular compounds using prefixes.

Include:  mono, di, tri and tetra.

1 Hook/Attention Getter

Activity: Presenting

The instructor will give a brief history lesson on the "Halifax Explosion."  This was an explosion that was caused by the collision of two ships that were containing combustible materials.  We can use this as an opportunity to learn about the explosion as well as the materials that were aboard those ships.  We can also focus on the names of those materials and their chemical formulas.  

2 Direct Instruction

The instructor will introduce the students to Nearpod.  Typically I have already shown them how to use the app.  But, I will use this time to refresh their memories.

3 Guided Practice

Students will use the Nearpod app to practice and get feedback with regards to writing names and formulas of ionic and covalent compounds.  

Nearpod is an app that allows students to use IPads in a 1:1 classroom setting.  The instructor can create the types of questions (short answer, quiz, matching, fill in the blank or draw it) that are presented to the students. When using Nearpod, students have to move at the pace of the instructor.  Nearpod allows students to get real time feedback to their answers and the instructor gets answers in real time as well.  This helps the instructor to make classroom assessments quickly.  It also allows the instructor to address the class or specific students immediately, if the instructor identifies any week areas.

The Nearpod review with focus on the following topics:  ionic and covalent bonds, writing the names and formulas of ionic and covalent compounds, identifying metals and non-metals, identifying polyatomic ions and using the naming tree (IUPAC guidelines).

4 Independent Practice

Students will receive a worksheet that will be given as homework.  They will use Canvas to obtain and submit the document.  Students without internet access will be given a hard copy.  The worksheet will include 20-30 questions regarding writing the names and formulas of ionic and covalent compounds.  It will be due the following day before class starts.  This will allow us to review the answers in class.  It will also allow me to give them a mark for that assignment within two days.

5 Wrap-up

After using the Nearpod app, the instructor will refer back to the naming tree and review how atoms combine in specific ratios.  The instructor will also review ionic and covalent compounds as well as polyatomic ions.
