Objectives

Students will be able to identify the differences between continent, country, state, city, and community through the use of Google Earth and ComicLife.

1 Take Screenshots in Google Earth

Model how to use the tools within Google Earth:

  • Zoom and rotate
  • Moving around globe
  • Compass tools (N-S-E-W)
  • Search tools
  • Taking screenshots and saving (File > Save > Save Image)

 

 

Student Instructions
  1. Open Google Earth
  2. Use zoom tools to show our continent
  3. Use Search tools and take a screenshot of the following regions:
    1. Our continent
    2. Our country
    3. Our state
    4. Our city
    5. Our school

2 Place images in ComicLife

  1. \Use the Comic Life template (CLICK HERE to download) to place each Google Earth screenshot into a Comic Life Panel.
  2. Use the captions to correctly identify each screenshot by their region (North America, USA, (your state), (your city), (your school).  
  3. Add some fancy "Lettering" as your title (example: Google Earth or Where I Live). 
  4. Finished product example: CLICK HERE

 

Student Instructions
  1. ​Open the Comic Life Template your teacher provided
  2. Navigate the "Libraries" section of ComicLife to find the screenshots you took in Google Earth
  3. Drag each of the five screenshots into a panel
  4. Drag the captions to correctly identify each region
  5. Add some fancy LETTERING and use different colors and backgrounds to make your comic unique
  6. Print your finished product

To extend this project for those who finish early, try the following suggestions:

  1. Add a 2nd page to Comic Life called "Natural Landmarks" and use the same technique of taking screenshots in Google Earth
  2. Take screenshots of natural landmarks in your state and place them into Comic Life with a description
  3. Add a page with screenshots from Google Earth that show popular tourist attractions in your state, city, or region
