Students will use an app in Google, called Lucid Chart to brainstorm about themselves while building a Thinking Map using descriptive langauge. Present to students how to make a Lucidchart. Explore and create together. Students will be excited to design there own app and talk about themselves. Students can discuss descpritive langauge and ideas together. After completing their map, they may embellish and personalize their creation. Print if you would like, to pepare for next step.

2 Direct Instruction

This isn't so much direct insturction, but is the next step in Getting to Know the Class unit. After students have completed their Lucid Chart and have personalized it with what they want (great practice for using various editing tools and expressing themselves), they will create a Wordle. This word cloud creator will allow students to use the descriptive langauge from their Lucid Chart and present it another form. Students will take both the printed Lucid Chart and completed Word Cloud about theselves and glue them together. They will use both documents for the next step.

3 Guided Practice

Voki Classroom
Free to Try, Paid

In this step students will use both their Lucid Chart and Wordle to think about and construct a Voki to model themselves after. Once they have created their Voki they will then write a brief paragraph for their Voki to verbalize. Attention should be paid to small details, such as design, content, and grammar.

4 Independent Practice

Google Drive
Free, Paid

Last, students will embed the code for the Voki on a protopage where they can be showcased in a class gallery.

Student can record their embed code on a shared Google Documents with their name and class. Teachers can then embed  the codes themselves. This is a better idea than giving students direct  access to a class or school protopage.

5 Wrap-Up

Students will share from each of their Voki's on the class gallery protopage.

  • All students can work at their own pace for this unit. The expectations and amounts neccessary can be modified. As  the teacher you may ask for 10 describing words, a new font and a special shape or color while students are designing their Lucid Chart.
  • The acitivity has several extensions in itself from starting with the Lucid Chart, transitioning to the Wordle or Word Cloud, and finishing with a Voki avatar.

* Teacher can add feedback to each Voki, this has to be done during the approval stage for each Voki before you can get the embed code.
