Objectives

Students will be able to retell a story after practicing reading comprehension skills.   While student read stories they will practice and learn to use appropriate reading comprehensions.  The students will see the importance of not reading but truely understanding what they are reading.

1 Hook

Activity: Reading

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB3SUBlvcOg&safe=active to show students the skills needed for reading comprehension.  Students will watch a video of other students rapping the skills of reading comprehension.  The video will show the students that reading comprehension skills are needed to understand what they are reading.  

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Presenting

Go to http://www.reading-tutors.com/tips/TH_Tips_CompStrat.pdf.   In this lesson the teacher will show students the skills that they need use to understand what they are reading.  In doing this it will allow students to have time to ask questions.

3 Guided Practice

In groups of two students will find a story of interest to read together.  They will take notes or use the graphic organizer provided on Edmodo.  While doing this they will have the ability to read a short version of a story.  In doing this students will practice mastering the skill of reading comprehension.

4 Independent Practice

After guided practice students will find a story to read indecently to practice mastering reading comprehension skills.  While they are reading the story they will take notes or fill out the graphic organizer on Edmodo.  The students' will use the graphic organizers or notes to retell the story that they read to the class.  The students will be graded on their ability to retell the main details of the story that they read.

5 Wrap-Up

Activity: Assessing

Each student will be graded on ability level. Student can retell story by using iMovie, prezi, or power point.   Students will provide feedback on students performance on Edmodo Grading Rubrics after the students provide retell of the story.  Each student will be provided the opportunity to ask questions as the students retell story.

At the end of assessing presentation there will be a discussion among the whole class about the importance of reading comprehension skills.
