1 Hook

Activity: Presenting

Students will be introduced to fractions, what they look like and how they are formed by viewing the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnFrOetuUKg. This will give the students a baseline to begin the lesson.

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Exploring

Students will begin instruction on fractions by viewing the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJgusNWTIkA

After this video together the teacher and students will work on various examples to help the students to understand the concept of fractions and how to create those pictorial representations and transfer them into numerical representations.

3 Guided Practice

Activity: Other — Practicing

Students will work together in small groups and given manipulatives to set up pictorial representations of fractions. Once they have been given several examples they will switch and given a picture create the numerical representations. This will help see which students are understanding and which ones need some extra support.

4 Independent practice

Activity: Assessing

Students will independently work on their IXL account practicing fractions. This will give an assessment on how the students are doing and where they need to go next. Each student will work at their own pace and at their own ability. This allows each student to learn at their level.

5 Wrap up

Activity: Other — Practice

As a way to wrap up and reinforce learning the students will log on to the app Fractions Practice. On this app they will work on the section understanding fractions. This will help to secure their understanding of the concept they have just learned.
