Having read a passage and a related extended response question, project exemplary samples of student work from ISAT PDF of grade 6 extended response. Explain that we are going to read real student answers (anonymous) to identify important parts that make their response good. Teacher will model first.
Students will underline and annotate where they see something that makes the essay good (for example, a quotation from the text or a personal connection). Students will discuss and share what they determine.
2 Direct Instruction
Teacher will review key ideas that students have and then show how they correspond with "SLAM" mnemonic device for extended response: State part of the question in your answer, Locate evidence from the text. Add your own experience, Make a meaningful connection. Teacher will model construction of own response to same (or alternative) question using SLAM model.
Students will copy graphic organizer or use guided notes to fill out key elements (SLAM) of extended response.
3 Paired Practice
Teacher will provide additional reading and related question for students to construct a response. Students will work in pairs using Word Processing technology.
Students will discuss with one another and refer to graphic organizer to complete extended response in pairs.
4 Independent Practice
Teacher will provide third reading passage and instruct students to use graphic organizer for SLAM independently.
Students will independently create response to reading with detail and evidence for claims.
5 Wrap Up
Teacher will have students share and evaluate independent practice.
Students will read aloud work to peers.
