1 Hook/Attention Getter

The teacher will pull up google earth on the smart board. The teacher will lead a discussion with the students about places in the world. The teacher will ask, "do you ever wonder where these places actually are?" The teacher will give the example of the White House. The teacher will show the kids how to navigate google earth by showing the White House. The students will come up with places and the teacher will navigate the students there. Teacher will explain that in today's lessons we will be exploring the 5 themes of geography. 

2 Direct Instruction

Using quizlet on the iPads the students take a pre-test to see how much information about the 5 themes of Geography they already know. The quiz helps seperate the cateogories of the 5 themes and sees if the students can Identify them. This activity should take approx. 10 minutes. Then the teacher will go over a teacher created prezi that goes into the details about the 5 themes of geography. The prezi will go over MR. HeLP, which is Movement, Region, Human Environment, Location, and Place. The prezi will involve pictures and videos to help describe the themes. This activity should Appox. take 30 minutes.                                                                                                     



Student Instructions

The students will complete the prezi and then take notes during the prezi. 

3 Guided Practice

Using subtext, the teacher will import readings about the 5 themes of geography. The students will use iPads and use close reading techniques to further their information about the 5 themes of Geography. The teacher will model the app and the first reading section. Then the teacher and students will complete the second reading section together. The students will use groups of 3-4 to complete the third reading section. Finally, the students will try to complete the last section on their own.  *Sample questions- What is confusing about this excerpt? What you think __________________________ (examples)? What is meant by ___________________________? What one sentence that ___________________________? Appox time 20 minutes.

The students will work with the teacher and peers to complete the close reading. 

4 Independent Practice

Using the iPads the students will be directed to the website http://www.city-data.com. The students will choose a city within the US. The students will first have to write out the 5 themes of geography and explain what they mean. The students wil have to give absolute location and relative location. They will give landmarks in the cities that give the place. They will do each of these for the 5 themes. This activity should take appox 30 minutes. 

5 Wrap- Up


The students will work in groups of 3-4 and be given an iPad. The students will use an iPad and they will be directed to sim city. The students will be given appox an hour to create a city on the app. The city must be described by the 5 themes of geography as describe in other sections. The students will close by sharing their cities with the class and showing how they implemented the 5 themes into the city.
