Objectives

New York State Language Standards for Languages Other Than English

Standard 3-Connections- Students will connect with other disciplines and acquire information.

Students reinforce their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign lenguage, in this particular lesson technology and geography are intertwined into my repertoire to expose students to 21st century digital skills.
Use technology to present information that students learned offline, demonstrating their understanding of the topics discussed, Edmodo.

Use online resources to demonstrate how to cite sources, how to recognize public domain vs. non-public domain websites.

Use online resources to locate countries in Google maps, and to learn countries and capitals.

1 Prerequisites (Scaffolding):

Activity: Assessing

During the 1st marking period my students learned the unit “Digital Citizenship”. Students learned how to use an online citation maker (easybib), how to evaluate a website using the “5 W’s” , and how to identify the copyright symbol and what the meaning of copyrighted material means to avoid plagiarism. This lesson will build upon their prior learning on the topics aforementioned and they will apply their knowledge through a scavenger hunt. In addition, students have learned how to access Edmodo.

 

Misconceptions: Students will evaluate two website, one that is a public domain website, and one that is a non-public domain website to address misconceptions about copyright, seeking causes for their misconceptions such as copying and pasting information from the web without citations or copyright permissions.

Activity: Other — Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to recognize public domain websites vs. non-public domain websites.

Students will identify the copyright symbol.

Students will understand the importance of copyright notices and awareness and the 5Ws of websites.

Students will use Easybib, an online citation maker, to cite two sources.

Students will use Edmodo, an online classroom environment, to take an online quiz, and to submit their final project.

Students will explore three online resources that will help them in their project research for this unit.

Students will describe what information they can find in the cia website. Information that will be used in their final project. (7 topics)

Students will describe what information their will find in the culture-grams website (10 topics). Information that will be used in their final project.

Students will use Google maps to find a Spanish speaking country of their choice.

Students will recognize the “link” symbol in Google maps.

Students will research about a Spanish speaking country of their choice.

Students will create a Powerpoint, with 5 slides, to organize, and present their research about a Spanish Speaking country of their choice.

3 Scavenger Hunt

Formative assessment:

Students will answer to 10 comprehension questions through an online quiz (Scavenger Hunt) in Edmodo.  (This assessment matches objective #6)
 

Students will submit two citations, one from the CIA website, and another from the Culture-grams website. (This assessment matches objective #4 & 5)

          

Students will identify the three levels or games from the Sheppard’s Countries and Capitals website (This assessment matches objective #7)
 

Students will identify when the CIA website was last updated? (This assessment matches objective #3)

 

Students will identify when the culturegrams page was last copyrighted. (This assessment matches objective #2 & 3)
 

Students will analyze/verify if a website is on Public domain or not. (This assessment matches objective #1,2, & 3)
 

Students will provide a link to the location of the country they will be searching on Google Maps. (This assessment matches objective #8 & 9)

 

Summative Assessment

Students will research a Spanish Speaking country of their choice by using two website provided for their research.

5 Modifications

Activity: Other — Modifications

I will reteach the parts of the lesson in which students struggle the most, base of the students’ outcomes generated by Edmodo (DDI). ( D1 assessment results are used to plan future instruction)
 

I will delete student’s quizzes in Edmodo if students ask to redo their online quiz to improve their grade by retaking it online. (D3 demonstrating flexibility)
 

I will make myself available to students for extra help if requested. (D3 demonstrating responsiveness)
 

I will ask students to sign into my website, “Extra Help”, when they are staying after school. (D4 maintaining accurate records)
