Dividing by 1-Digit Divisors

The sharing interpretation of division and money can be used to model the standard division algorithm. In this lesson students learn to divide 3-digit whole numbers by 1-digit divisors.

Activity: Investigating

Students complete Do-Now Activity- Daily Common Core Review 4-4

-Project on Smart Projector and go over solutions as a whole class. Have students explain how they found their answer.

Activity: Investigating

Develop the Concept Interactive-

Focus- When you divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number, how do you know where to put the first digit of the quotient?

Purpose- Remind students that they already know how to use a model to divide a 3-digit by 1-digit number, today they will learn how to divide it without using a model.

Problem- Based Interactive Learning-  A fifth grade class collected $108 to share equally among 4 charities. How much will they donate to each charity?  give time for students to work with a partner to solve the problem. After students have finished solving the problem model using the U.S. Algorithm for long division.

Key Vocabulary for Today’s Lesson- Dividend, divisor, quotient, Overestimate , Underestimate (review and discuss key vocabulary during direct instruction)

Student Instructions

Pg. 80- Work with a partner to solve the following problem

3 Guided Practice: Develop the Concept

*Digital Learning Visual: Display the video on the Smartboard and share with students as a whole group. Students should follow along in the handbook on the top of pg. 89. Pause the video at certain locations to clarify concepts for students. Check for understanding throughout the video.

4 Guided/ Independent Practice

Activity: Presenting

Teacher will present Smartboard lesson for Guided Practice Problems 1-8. Model and demonstrate how to solve the division problems for students.

Student Instructions

Complete handbook pg. 89, problems 9-28 independently in your journals. Remember to use estimation to check your quotients for reasonableness.

5 Reflection/ Link/ Assessment

Assessment- On Laptops students complete Digital Daily Quick Check 4-4 to assess students’ understanding of dividing whole numbers.

6 Intervention

Direct students to work on their iPad on the KenKen Puzzle App. Differentiate for different leveled learners by assigning 3X3 for below level, 4X4 for intermediate, and 5x5 for advanced learners.
