1 Introduction

Google Drive
Free, Paid

When students log into google, there is an image on the top corner representing them.  I log into my google account and show the image I use to represent myself online.  Young students should not share pictures of themself online.  Cartoon images are fun and safer.

Student Instructions

Log into your google drive.  What picture do you see there for you?

2 Create Online cartoon

Have the students visit http://www.weeworld.com/

Stress they are only going to use the emoji creator - 'Create WeeMee' tab.

As students create their personalized cartoon, the image will look more like them, but still be safe to share online.

Student Instructions

Visit http://www.weeworld.com/

Do NOT create an account!

We are only using their 'Create WeeMee' option.

Navigate through choosing face shape, skin & eye color, hair, clothes, etc.

3 Capture a screen shot

Activity: Creating

Use a keyboard combination to capture a screen shot of their created weemee

Stress using a screen capture lets them keep their creation without having to share personal information this social site requires.

Student Instructions

On PC computers, use shift-PrintScreen to capture a screen shot

On apple computers, use command-shift-4 (don't need to crop later)

On Ipad, press both buttons (sleep+home) at the same time.

This way you take a picture of the cartoon you just made and we don't have to share personal information the site requires to save on their site.

4 Crop captured screen shot.

Use a graphic editor to crop screen shot

Student Instructions

Open Gimp (open source photoshop clone) or other graphic editing program

Create a new image with dimensions at least as big as your screen resolution (letter sized is usually plenty big)

paste in your screen shot

Use crop tool (exacto knife) to cut out the WeeMee

Export the file to yourname.jpg in your local documents folder

5 Upload your image to your Google profile

Google Drive
Free, Paid

Go into google drive, and update their profile picture

Student Instructions

Log back into your google account (or change tabs)

Click on your picture, Choose Profile, hover over photo, Change picture should pop up.  Drag new file in place.

Voila!  You have a fun new profile picture.
