Watch Khan Academy video "Comparing Fractions with greater than and less than symbols" to review fractions vocabulary and basic comparing.
2 Direct Instruction
Teacher will use Flipchart to help teach about comparing fractions with unlike denominators using <, >, and = symbols. Teacher will discuss and demonstrate how to find common denominators then compare the numerators. Fraction number lines and fraction bar manipulatives will be used.
3 Guided Practice
Teacher will pull small groups. Students will use Whiteboard app to practice problems. Teacher will monitor student work and correct any misunderstandings as necessary.
4 Independent Practice
Students will show students how to use Oh No Fractions! app on AppleTV, then monitor student work and provide help as needed.
Students will work independently on Oh No Fractions! app game. Students will be presented with 2 fractions and have to choose <, >, or = sign to place in between. Students will show their work on notebook paper.
5 Wrap Up
Teacher will demonstrate to students how to use the Explain Everything app using the AppleTV.
Students will create their own problem to solve and explain on app. Voice and drawing explanations will be required.
Key Standards Supported
|4.NF: Extend Understanding Of Fraction Equivalence And Ordering.|
|4.NF.2||Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.|
