- Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. (Common Core 3.NBT.A2)
- Estimate solutions to and solve single-step and multistep problems involving the sum or difference of two whole numbers, each 9,999 or less, with or without regrouping. (VA SOL 3.4)

1 Hook

Playing the "Ice Ice Maybe" Game, use the Emperor Penguin path in front of the room to engage the class. Use random sticks to choose a student to play each round. Between rounds, discuss what strategies the students are using/could use to get the correct answer.

2 Direct Instruction

Use the Addition Fact topic tool to generate numbers for students to add. Solve as a whole class.

3 Guided Practice

Using the Dancing Robot activity, practice solving addition and subtraction problems.

4 Independent practice
