European Exploration

1. After reviewing information on who Christopher Columbus was, students in an exit worksheet will name the three ships he sailed with, who funded his voyage, and the name of the islands where he landed.

 2. Students will create a timeline. On the time line they will label what year Columbus landed in the Americas, when his last voyage was, when Vespucci arrived in the Americas.

3.Students will understand the tools and maps that were used for exploration and will compare and contrast giving three similarities and differences between today's explorers and ones of the early explorers.

1 Introduction to What we don't know (The hook)

Activity: Conversing

Write a journal question upon the board asking students: " What is globalization? Are we a globalized society today and if yes, then in what ways? Do we still have explorers?

Give students 10 minutes to write.

Discuss journal entries for 10 minutes.

Student Instructions

Read the journal question.

Answer the question.

Discuss answers or questions about the journal entry.

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Presenting

Present a lecture to students about Who Columbus was. Who funded Columbus. Why they the Spanish funded him The names of the ships he sailed on. When he arrived in the America. Where he initially believed he was.

Take notes on key terms and dates provided by the instructor.

3 Guided Practice

Activity: Investigating

I will introduce students to Waldseemuller's map. Point out that this was the first map that included America.

Introduce the tools that early explores used.


Student Instructions

Determine if some of the longitude and latitude points used by the early explorers are correct today.

4 Independent practice

Ask students how accurate this map is today. Also have students compare and contrast maps of today and the map of 1507. Compare latitude and longitude and determine how close they were in 1507.

Using google Earth, compare and contrast Waldseemuller's map to today's technologal map. Cite at least 3 similarities and 3 differences.

5 Wrap-up

Activity: Assessing

In an exit worksheet, students will be asked to identify the name of the explorer in 1492 who connected the hemispheres.

Students will also name the ships he sailed with. As well as the tools he used as an explorer.

Last students will identify 2 new forms of exploration in today's society.
