Lesson Plan

College Bound

This is an activity towards the end of our unit entitled "Our Online Lives Like a Tattoo". The focus of the unit is on the permanence of the things we post online and the possible consequences of being irresponsible online.

This lesson comes from Common Sense Media  found here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/lesson/college-bound-9-12.  Students take the role of college admissions counselor. Students are given profiles of two incoming freshmen who have very similar grades, test scores, and quality of essays. Students must decide which of the two gentlemen will be accepted to the university, which I called Valponi State University (VSU).

At this point in the unit, students have practiced simple argument writing, and this is used as an assessment to determine what they have learned. Because  this is to be an activity that students complete independently and is meant to familiarize them with submitting work online, I use our class Edmodo page to complete the activity. The two student profiles as an attachment on the assignment post.

Students are instructed to write an argument in which they determined which student was accepted to VSU, using at least three pieces of evidence and commentary to explain their evidence. Students then uploaded and submitted their work to Edmodo.
