Subjects
Math

#### 1 Hook

Slice It!
Free, Paid

Students use Slice It app as an introduction to line of symmetry and making equal groups in a whole.

#### 2 Direct Instruction

Use LearnZillion lesson "Describe a fraction by counting the number of shares" found in the lesson set "Partition shapes into parts with equal areas" for the direct instructional piece. This website lesson can be projected and used as a whole group lesson or used for individual or small group work by students accessing the lesson on a computer.

#### 3 Guided Instruction

Students use Geoboard app (by the Math Learning Center) to build equal shares in various shapes, then identify and name fractional parts as you name them.

#### 4 Independent Practice

Students use Geoboard app (by the Math Learning Center) to build equal shares in various shapes, then identify and name fractional parts as you name them.

#### 5 Wrap-up

Activity: Assessing

Use music to do a quick observation assessment of your students.  Before the lesson, use paper plates and paper rectangles to draw and color simple fraction "flash cards" (ie: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/3, 2/3). This will allow students to see fractions in both circular and rectangular shapes. You can see which students are struggling with identification of fractions.
