Inquiry-Based Learning Scenario

The year is 1418. You have been given the task of building the world's largest dome. The dome will put the finishing touches on the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Florence, Italy.

Student Warmup Questions

1) How would you prepare for this challenge?

After students have written down their answers, discuss the following options:

- Build Scale Models or Replicas

- Research Examples and Diagrams

- Talk to Master Craftsmen & Guild Members 

2) What type of training do architects and engineers need to build structures today?

- If possible, you may want to arrange an interview with an engineer or architecture expert via Google Hangouts

3)  What information would you want to know before you begin this building project?

- A local newspaper article about a current building project in your community may provide many good details for discussion, such as cost, materials, location, time frame, purpose, etc.
