1 Hook-Read sample book reviews, View Augmented Reality Sample Book Review

-Have students explore sample book reviews on the Kirkus website.

-Ask students to read several book reviews and discover what all of the reviews have in common.

-Show students an Aura of a sample book review created by the teacher.

2 Direct Instruction/Guided Practice-Write a Children's Book Review

1-Before class, select a popular children's book to read to the students.

2-As a group, use these guidelines to write a four-paragraph book review of the book. 

Paragraph 1

o Name of book

o author

o genre

o at least 2 details about the author (ideas listed below)

o Have they written other books?

o What inspired them to write this book?

o Where are they from?

Paragraph 2

o short, concise summary of the book that includes plot information:

o Exposition-setting and main characters

o Conflict

o Rising Action

o Climax

o Resolution

Paragraph 3

o opinion of the book, WITH REASONS

o suggestions on what I would have done to improve this book

o Different Endings

o Authoring from a different character’s Point of View

Paragraph 4

o I stated who I would recommend this book to and WHY

3-After the whole-group review is written, pair students.  Have each pair select another children's book to read and review, using the above guidelines.

Student Instructions

-With your partner, select a children's book and write a review for it.  Import the graphic organizer of book review guidelines into Notability and complete, adding your book review to the bottom of the graphic organizer.  Edit and revise your review.

3 Independent Practice-Book selection, read, and write a book review

-Guide students through the selection, reading, and writing of a book review, as practiced with the children's book.

-Create a class account in Aurasma.

-Model using the Aurasma app for students using these directions:

To Create an Aura in Aurasma:

  1. Click the “A” at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click the person at the bottom right corner
  3. Click Account
  4. Click Join
  5. Click Existing     username: xxxxx,   password: xxxx
  6. Click on My Auras
  7. Click on Book reviews 
  8. Click the “+” sign
  9. Click Device (at bottom)
  10. Click the “+” sign
  11. Click Photo Album
  12. Select your video
  13. Click Use
  14. Name it (use your name)
  15. Click Finish
  16. Take a picture of your book cover (click the purple camera in the bottom right corner)
  17. Resize to so both are similar in size
  18. Click Purple arrow in lower right corner
  19. Name Aura (Your name and Book Title)
  20. Add to Channel
  21. Click “Book Reviews”
  22. Click “Finish”


Student Instructions

1-Select a novel to read

2-Import the graphic organizer of book review guidelines into Notability and complete.  

3-Add your four paragraph book review to this document.  Edit and revise review.

4-Using the camera on your iPad, record yourself reading your book review.

5-Using the directions provided by your teacher, create an Aura of your recording and your book cover.

4 Wrap Up: Share Your Book Review

-Have students share their book reviews with other students.  

-Set books around room and students rotate throughout the room listening to other's reviews.
