1 Direct Instruction/Modeled

Activity: Reading

Have students listen to the Dr. Seuss book "What Pet Should I Get". Discuss how the main characters are trying to figure out what pet would be best for them.

Ask students if they could have any pet, what would they choose and why? Today they are going to research an animal for a pet they would, or maybe would not, like to have.

*You can use other books for this lesson too, "One Cool Friend" by Tony Buzzeo, or "I Wanna Iguana" by Karen Kaufman Orloff would work.

2 Guided

Have students get onto the database PebbleGo and find the animal database. From there, have students choose an animal they would be interested in. Give students time to look through the animals before they decide. They will have to fill out a graphic organizer with some information about these animals.

The graphic organizers are found on PebbleGo's website under each animal there is a "Print" option, use the "Share What you Know" printable for students to gather information about their animal.

3 Independent

Free, Paid

When the graphic organizer has been completed, students are ready to use ABCya's Story Maker website to create their persuasive letter. This can be written for their parents, a teacher, or anyone they want to convince that  they need  (or don't need) this animal for a pet

Students should type their sentences first, and then draw a picture for each page.


Student Instructions

Use your information  you gathered to start writing about why this animal would or would not be a good pet.

Example: a crocodile would not be a good pet because they can weigh up to 2,000 pounds.

Be sure to draw a picture of your animal with each page you create.

4 Wrap-Up

Activity: Assessing

Print off the pages for the students, or display them on a projector. Ask volunteers to come up and present their animals and why it would or would not be a good pet. If there are debates about animals, have students use facts to discuss both sides.
