1 Hook/Attention Getter

Activity: Reading

Ask students to tell what they have learned about animals (habitat, defense, body coverings, movement, etc.).  Show some examples of Alphabet Books by author Jerry Pallotta.  Read one of his books (The Ocean Alphabet Book, The Dinosaur Alphabet Book, The Fury Animal Alphabet Book, etc.).  Explain to students that they will be writing a class Alphabet book.  

2 Guided Practice

Show students 3 websites for research:  Pebble Go, National Geographic Kids, and World Book Online Encyclopedia.  Explain how to find animal information through topics and keywords.  

Student Instructions
  • Students will explore the online resources and decide which animal that they would like to research and write about.  
  • Students will take notes by recording information on a graphic organizer.

3 Independent Practice

Direct students to use a word processing program (Word or Google Docs) to write their paragraph.  

Find animal pictures that can be uploaded to the Tagxedo website for each student.  

Create an Animal ABC book in printed format.  A digital format can also be created if desired.  

Student Instructions

Students will use Microsoft Word or Google Docs if they have a school Google account to write a paragraph about their animal.

Go to the Tagxedo website and copy/paste the animal paragraph.  

Use an existing animal shape or upload an animal picture to go with the animal.  Print picture which will show the writing and the animal shape.
