Flocabulary
Free to Try, Paid

Instruct students that for this lesson students will be learning how to add fractions with unlike denominators.  They will learn the skill and then create lessons teaching the skill.

Show students the Flocabulary lesson on adding fractions***

While students are watching, have them think about what made the video engaging, and how did it help them learn, or prepare to learn, about the skill.

Student Instructions

Watch the flocabulary video on adding fractions.

Think: How did this video teach me?  How did they make it fun?  How did they present the skill in a way that got my attention?

2 Direct Instruction

  1. Teach students how to add fractions using your curriculum as a guide.***
  2. As you are teaching, have students think about what they are learning. Have them think how would they teach this to a younger student?  What's easy? What's tricky? What needs the most explaining?

***For example, I will be using the Go Math curriculum as required by my school.

Student Instructions
  1. Students watch as I model adding fractions, participate in explicit teaching activities.
  2. Students think: What's easy/tricky about this math skill? How could I present and teach this skill better than my teacher?

3 Group Work Collaboration

Activity: Exploring
  1. Have students work together to create their own problem ***
  2. Have students plan how they will solve and present this problem, focusing on each step to solve, and using math vocabulary.

***can differentiate by having them create a situational word problem that needs to be solved, or by just creating the fraction expression

Student Instructions
  1. Work with group to create and solve a fraction addition problem.
  2. Plan how to present the problem.  Think: What are the steps?  What are the math terms?

4 Group Work - Presenting

Teach students how to navigate the Educreations app

Students need to know how to:

  • Add new pages
  • Draw on the page, using different colors
  • Add text to lesson
  • Add images to lesson
  • Record voices and drawings***
  • Save lesson

Have students create their lessons!!!

***there is no way to review what was said and done while recording.  Explain to students that they need to practice before the record.  They may pause while recording and practice piece by piece instead of doing everything straight through

Student Instructions

Create lesson using Educrations

  • Plan out how many pages and any images/text needed before recording
  • Record yourself teaching the lesson!
  • Save and share with the teacher and class!!!

5 Present and Critque

Display student lessons created

Have students critique what they see by complimenting and critiquing

Compliment: What did you like?  What stood out?  How was the video engaging?

Critiquing: Would a student with no introduction to the skill learn from this video?  What could the creators have done to enhance learning?

Student Instructions

Watch the video, come up with a compliment and critique to help the creators do better next time:

Compliment: What did you like?  What stood out?  How was the video engaging?

Critiquing: Would a student with no introduction to the skill learn from this video?  What could the creators have done to enhance learning?
